What happens when a pet is returned?

See how a returned pet's record changes and where to find it.

When a pet is returned or surrendered in your shelter software, Petszel immediately ceases communication for that adopter. Adopter Hub updates its record and takes it off the Adoptions List. The pet's full history stays on its profile, so the next adopter's support starts informed.

What changes on a returned pet's profile

  • The header shows a Returned tag instead of In Home.
  • Household reads No pet in household.
  • Triage is turned off, since there's no current adopter to contact.
  • Check-ins keep the former adopter, with their start and end dates and the reason for the return.
  • Internal Notes keep everything your team recorded, from the adoption through the return.

Find a returned pet: use search, since returned pets don't appear on the Adoptions List.

On the former adopter's pet parent profile, the pet stays in Survey History with a tag such as Surrendered, so you can see their history across every adoption.
